BNP yesterday alleged that a ruling party MP's reported confession to killing people in crossfire has proved that the government is directly involved in all the incidents of extrajudicial killing and enforced disappearance, reports UNB.
Speaking at a press conference at the party's' Nayapaltan central office, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also said Awami League's Savar MP Enamur Rahman has taken the cat out of the bag with his comment that he ordered the murder of five 'terrorists' in 'crossfire' and making a list of 14 others to do so.
"The government has long been dismissing our allegations and also of local and international rights bodies over the enforced disappearances and extra judicial killings. Their MP is now saying about the killing of five people in crossfire and making a list of 14 others," he said.
The BNP leader further said, "The MP's announcement of making a list of people for killing in crossfire has proved that the BNP's allegation against the government of carrying out a killing programme is correct."
According to media reports, the Savar MP in a recent interview with a Bengali daily said he sent five people to put on crossfire for murder and prepared a list of 14 others.
As his remark has sparked off huge criticisms, Enamur on Friday withdrew his statement.
Rizvi said though the MP has withdrawn his comment, BNP leaders and activists in Savar have been passing their days amid panic.
"The nation has got the correct message that the government has its direct involvement in all the incidents of extrajudicial killing and enforced disappearance, although the MP has been forced to withdraw his statement," he said.
The BNP leader said it has now become clear to people that the government has been unlawfully killing BNP men and repressing them to hang onto power.
Rizvi also alleged that ruling party cadres with the help of law enforcers are trying to foil their party's member collection drive at different parts of the country.
He accused the government agencies of spreading a false campaign using the names of BNP standing committee members Tariqul Islam, MK Anwar and Mahbubur Rahman in a planned way to mislead people.
Rizvi warned the government that its move to weaken BNP through resorting to various plots and repressive acts will turn futile again. "BNP leaders and activists at all levels are united under our chairperson Khaleda Zia's leadership."
