Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-4) arrested five members of a statue smuggling gang with a touchstone statue worth Tk 20 crore from Basail village in Shivalaya upazila of Manikganj on Tuesday. The arrestees were identified as Ismail Hossain, 32, a resident of Poila village in Shivalaya upazila, Chan Mia Bepari, 70, of Zafarganj village in the upazila, Ranojit Sarker, 35, of Nayakandi Purbopara village, Delawar Hossain, 28 and Alamgir Sheikh, 30, of Golra Purbapara village in Saturia upazila. Major Mohammad Masudur Rahman of RAB-4 said RAB members, in guise of buyers, went to the house of Sobed Ali Mollik at Basail village around 3 pm on Tuesday and fixed up price of the statue Tk 2 crore. When they brought the statue out from the house, RAB members arrested the alleged smugglers and seized the statue weighing six and half kilograms, the RAB official said. Officer-in-charge of Shivalaya police station Rokibuzzaman said RAB members handed the five arrestees over to the police station on Tuesday night. RAB members filed a case against the arrestees, the OC said adding that they were taken to Manikganj court yesterday.
