Natl unity not possible undermining Zia:?BNP

BNP yesterday claimed that the national unity cannot be established by undermining the contribution of late President Ziaur Rahman. “We welcome the recent statement of Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on national unity. Our party also thinks that there should be unity on different national issues. Otherwise, national progress will not be possible,” BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon said while addressing a press conference at the party central office at Naya Paltan in the capital. National development cannot be ensured undermining anyone, he said. Ripon, also the international affairs secretary, criticised Syed Ashraf for making contradictory remarks on his statement regarding the national unity by steering more controversies on political disputes. “We certainly want a national unity. But we have to come above of political disputes and resolve those issues,” he said.  Replying to a question, he said the judiciary cannot work unless it is freed from the influence of the government. Asked for comments on the AL’s call to Khaleda Zia to refrain from observing her birth anniversary on August 15, he said it is her personal matter and that he cannot make any comment on the matter. “Khaleda Zia never celebrated her birthday on her own. It was a natural manifestation of party leaders and workers,” he said. Among others, Asadul Habib Dulu, Abdus Salam Azad and Shammi Akhter, were present on the occasion.
