The High Court yesterday stayed for six months the result of elections of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Teachers Association-2017, reports UNB. An HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order following a petition filed by a professor of the BSMMU.
The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the election result of the BSMMU Teachers Association should not be declared illegal and illegitimate. Health Secretary, Education Secretary, Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, its registrar and the Election Commission and other concerned have been made respondents to the rule.
Advocate Mamun Mahbub stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman represented the state.
Advocate Mamun Mahmub said the registrar of the BSMMU sent a letter to the election committee asking to postpone the result of the election of BSMMU Teachers Association as two members of the committee formed to conduct the election resigned on July 6.
On July 13, chief election commissioner Prof. Atiqur Rahman declared Prof. Julfiker Rahman ad Md Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan as president and general secretary of the association respectively without any contestn. Later, Prof Faruk Hossain filed a writ petition challenging the legality of the committee.
