The Detective Branch (DB) summoned and questioned writer and columnist Farhad Mazhar yesterday after they reportedly found ‘discrepancies’ in his confessional statement over his alleged kidnapping. Mazhar was questioned for over an hour—from 12 noon to 1.05 pm—at the office of the DB of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Police said they have found inconsistencies in Mazhar’s statement in court and the one he had recorded with them.
Mazhar was questioned about his recorded conversation, the CCTV footage taken in front of Khulna New Market and sending money to Archana using Bkash, police said.
Mazhar’s wife, Farida Akhter, said she had gone to the DB office along with her husband. “The police asked us about several things. We have told them whatever we
know,” she said. The deputy commissioner (media) of DMP, Masudur Rahman, told reporters that Mazhar was called to the DB office as the information police gathered after their investigation did not match the statement he recorded in court under Section 164 CrPC.
On Thursday, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque said Mazhar was not abducted. He had left home of his own.
On July 3, Mazhar’s family claimed that he had been kidnapped by unknown criminals from Adabar in Dhaka in the early hours of the day. His wife filed an abduction case in Adabar police station on that day. Around 11.30pm on the same day, police found him in a Hanif Paribahan bus when he was apparently returning to Dhaka from Khulna. Metropolitan magistrate Ahsan Habib released him on a personal bond of Tk. 10,000 after recording his statement on July 4.
