With the country’s most glamorous tournament BPL 2017 four months away, the Icon players have already made up their mind to change their franchisees.
Seven teams had participated in the last edition of the cash-rich tournament where five Icons—Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and two A+ category players—Sabbir Rahman and Soumya Sarkar were distributed in different teams as per the mutual understanding. The seven players however were bracketed under the category of A+ with the five senior players’ price were much higher than that of those two.
In the fifth version of the tournament however only two players—Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad chose to stay in their previous teams-- Dhaka Dynamites and Khulna Titans. The rest of the five players have been in talk to change the teams.
Opener Tamim Iqbal, considered as the best batsman in the country’s history, was confirmed by Comilla Victorians even though his previous franchise Chittagong Vikings is still chasing him.
The champion of the 2014 BPL Victorians finished seventh in the last edition and therefore stressed upon the requirement of brining back the aura. They brought back coach Sheikh Salahuddin under whose guidance Comilla won the title in the revamped BPL in 2014. They released the last year’s coach Khaled Mashud Pilot and also captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza who reportedly was unease with the team in the last year.
The national ODI captain however looks set to join Rangpur Riders.
Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim is all but sure to move to a new franchise after his recent problems with Barisal Bulls owner. It is learnt he will join Rajshahi Kings who formed team, keeping Sabbir Rahman as their most valued player in the last edition.
Sabbir Rahman and Soumya Sarkar are still undecided with their teams.
As BPL governing council hinted that Sylhet will be back in the race this year, it means another Icon would have to be added in the existing list and probably fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman will complete the list given his name, fame and performance.
Mustafizur, a player of Dhaka Dynamites missed the whole tournament in the last year due to his injury.
The governing council is considering Imrul Kayes as the Icon also in the upcoming edition but that didn’t go well with Comilla Victorians who wants to retain Liton Das, Saifuddin and Imrul - as per the rule of holding onto four cricketers from past.
The players’ draft of the BPL is set to be held in September with the tournament proper starting on November 4.
