12 hurt in road accident

At least twelve people sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup van at Debpara in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district on Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Monday morning.

Identities of the injured could not be known immediately. Sony Chowdhury, a local journalist of Nabiganj, also one of witnesses of the accident, said a bus of Ena Paribahan coming from Dhaka collided head-on with a pickup van from opposite direction at about 7:00 am, leaving 12 people critically injured.

Later, the injured were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Immediately after the accident, locals blocked the highway for half an hour, halting traffic movement.

Jhut godown catches fire

A fire broke out in a jhut godown at Diyabari Beribadh in capital’s Mirpur area on Sunday afternoon.

Fire Service sources said that the fire broke out in the godown around 3pm. On information, six fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after one hour frantic efforts.

However, it could not know immediately what caused the fire.

Mahbubur Rahman passes away

Former Information Secretary Dr Mahbubur Rahman yesterday passed away at a hospital in the capital due to cardiac arrest at the age of 64.

He was a civil servant of 79 batch, said an official release.

Dr Rahman served the ministries of the Information, the Jute and Textile and Post and the Post and Telecommunication in different capacities, the release added.

 He, also known as prominent writer and researcher, left behind wife, a son, two daughters and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

AKM Moniruzzaman dies

AKM Moniruzzaman (Babul), a Freedom Fighter, passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Sunday morning. He was 62, says a press release.

Babul, also office secretary of Bangladesh India Friendship Society (BIFS), was admitted at the hospital with physical complexities recently.

Mahabub had been suffering from cancer for the last one year. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and three sons.

President and secretary of the Bangladesh India Friendship Society expressed deep shock at the death of Babul.
