The ongoing hunger strike was continued at Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday as four more students joined the programme to express solidarity with the movement demanding withdrawal of a vandalism case filed against 56 students of the university.
The four students, who joined the strike were identified as: Faisal Ahmed (Rudra) of Philosophy, Nayeemul Alam Mishu of Bangla, Tasnuva Tazin Eva of Journalism and Media Studies and Ratul Khalid of Anthropology department of the university.
The total number of hunger striker rose to 8 till filing this report. Earlier, Tahmina JahanTuli, of English and Khan Muntasir Arman, 43rd batch student of Law and Justice department joined the strike on Sunday morning expressing solidarity with Sarder Zahid and Puja Biswas who started hunger strike unto death on Saturday.
A large number of students of the university expressed their solidarity with the ongoing strike. Among the students, Puja Biswash, Sarder Zahid and Tahmina Jahan Tuli became ill while they were under doctor’s supervision.
Meanwhile, a group of students under the banner of ‘Protibader Nam Jahangirnagar’ placed a four- point demand through a press conference around at 3pm held on the JU Central Shaheed Minar premises. They also announced to organise a big rally today (Tuesday) as a part of their protest.
Meanwhile, pro-Awami back teachers’ unity demanded the exemplary punishment to those responsible for ‘vandalising’ JU VC’s house and assaulting teachers. Raising the demands, under the banner ‘Bangabandhur Adorsho O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj’ they brought out a silent procession at 1pm from Social Science Faculty which paraded different streets on the campus and ended at JU Registrar building.
Earlier, on May 26, marketing student Nazmul Hasan Rana, 24, and Microbiology student Arafat, 24, were killed as a bus hit a human hauler carrying them on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar's C&B bus stand.
Afterwards, agitating students blocked the highway demanding speed breakers there. But police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse them. At least 10 people, including students, a JU official and two journalists, were injured at that time.
