SUST Rag Day of 21st batch in Sept
SYLHET: A two-day Rag Day of 21st batch of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) under the academic year 2010-11 will be celebrated in September. The 2010-11 batch rag committee informed it to the journalists at a press briefing held at SUST Press Club yesterday.
The committee said the day likely to be celebrated from September 3 to 4 on the campus. A booth has been set up in front of the central library on the campus for registration. The registration fee is fixed Tk 600for each student.
Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, chief adviser of the programme, inaugurated the registration booth on Tuesday. The programmes, included bring out procession, cutting cake, concert, cultural night, gala dinner. Convener Mohaiminul Bashar Raj, Member Secretary Gazi Mehedi Hasan Shuvo, Co-Convener Sheikh Anika Rahman, Anjuman Ara Sammi of RAG committee, spoke at the press briefing, , among others.
DU, Malaysian university sign MoU
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Dhaka University (DU) and Asian Institute of Medicine Science Technology, Malaysia AIMST , Malaysia, was signed at the DU VCs office on Tuesday to promote education and research activities.
DU treasurer Md Kamal Uddin and Medicine Faculty Dean of AIMST University PK Rajesh signed the MoU on behalf of the respective institution.
DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) AAMS Arefin Siddique, Science Faculty Dean Md Abdul Aziz, Medicine Faculty Dean Md Ismail Khan, CARS Director Altaf Hussain and AIMST University Senior Lecturer Kazi Selim Anwar were present, among others, on the occasion.
According to the MoU, DU and AIMST University will jointly conduct teaching and research activities, degree programmes and initiative to introduce credit transfer programmes.
They will also organise mobility, staff development and internship programme for developing both staffs and students skill. DU VC thanked the AIMST university authority for signing MoU and hoped that this initiative would enhance the quality of education and research at both.
Seminar on electoral management held
SAVAR: Gono Bishwabidyalay organised a seminar titled electoral management, administration and process in Bangladesh and India on its campus at Savar yesterday, says a press release.
Hasibur Rahman, senior lecturer, Department of Politics and Governance, Gono Bishwabidyalay, presented a research paper with Mesbahuddin Ahmad, vice chancellor, in the chair. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, chairman, Jatiya Nirbachan Parjabekkhan Parishad (JANIPOP), was the chief discussant while Mahmud Shah Qureshi, dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the university, spoke in the seminar.
Monsur Musa, head, Department of English, Md Rafiqul Alam, head, Department of Law, took part in the question-answering session. Sherina Khatun, lecturer, Department of Politics and Governance conducted the seminar.

JS body directs IU to follow UGC rules
Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Undertaken on Tuesday directed the Islamic University (IU) to follow the rules of University Grants Commission (UGC).
It also urges the IU authority to take necessary measures so that no audit objection is raised in future.
The directives came at the 17th meeting of the committee held at Jatiya Sangsand Bhaban with its chairman Shawkat Ali in the chair.
Committee members Muhibur Rahman Manik, Abdur Rauf and Advocate Navana Akhter attended the meeting.
The committee was apprised there was a total of 619 audit objections from 1978 to 2013-14 in the IU, of which 132 objections have been settled. Besides, there are 487 unsettled audit objections which have an involvement of nearly Tk 99.91 crore.
The parliamentary watchdog body passed recommendation to settle the audit objections through bilateral or trilateral meetings.
It also urged the IU authorizes to fulfill the 30 per cent freedom fighters children quota during appointment of human resources and also follow the appointment guideline of government. Education Secretary, UGC member, IU Vice-chancellor and officials concerned were present at the meeting.
Actuarial science seminar held at EWU
A seminar on actuarial science was held at the East West University (EWU) at Aftabnagar in the capital on Tuesday, says a press release.
The seminar was organised by the Department of Applied Statistics, EWU on the eve of initiation of a postgraduate diploma in Actuarial Science programme
M Shefaque Ahmed, actuary, chairman, Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority, was the chief guest. Sohrab Uddin, actuary, chairman, Sadharan Bima Corporation and Ahmed Shafee, vice-chancellor, EWU, were the special guests in the seminar.
Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson, Board of Trustees of the EWU and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, chaired the seminar. The course curriculum was presented by M Ataharul Islam, chairperson, Department of Applied Statistics, and M Mosleh-Uddin, member of the Board of Trustees and the Programme Advisor of the Department of Applied Statistics, EWU conducted the open discussion in the seminar.
Meanwhile, a postgraduate diploma in the actuarial science programme will start at the Department of Applied Statistics of EWU, from September, 2015. This is going to be the first such a program to be offered by any university in Bangladesh.
