Nazmul Hasan, 12, a class seven student, was mercilessly beaten by a teacher and had to be hospitalised for treatment of injuries. The incident took place yesterday during the school hours at the Union Polli Unnayan Institute under Uzirpur upazila of the district. The police visited the school and the accused teacher has been served a show-cause notice by the probe committee instituted to determine the facts.
The injured student Nazmul, and his friend Monoyar, said that they had gone out of their classroom at about 12:30 pm to drink water. After returning, Nazmul found that someone had tied his bag with ropes. He was protesting about it loudly. At the same time, other students were making a noise about a fan that was not working.
Then Md. Shahin, who was teaching in another classroom, came in and started thrashing Nazmul mercilessly. The young boy lost his balance and fell down in the corridor, but the teacher continued beating him. As a result, Nazmul received serious injuries. Hearing the commotion, other teachers rescued Nazmul from the clutches of an angry Shahin and administered first aid.
Later at night, Nazmul complained of pain in his hands, head and back. He also developed a high fever. The boy’s parents, Hemayet Uddin and Nargis Begum, rushed him to the Banaripara upazila health complex at around 7:30 pm. Dr. Rita Rani Shil, the doctor on duty, said she discovered injuries in different parts of the body, and the boy was running a temperature. The class teacher, Beauty Gharami, confirmed the incident. After hearing the news, police officials from the Banaripara and Uzirpur police stations visited the hospital and recorded the victim’s statement. They also recorded the statements of various school officials.
Md. Rezaul Kabir, Headmaster of the Union Polli Unnayan Institute, said that a committee formed to probe the incident has already issued a show-cause notice to Shahin. The teacher has been sent on leave. Kabir informed that the three-member committee, headed by Assistant Headmaster, Md. Siddikur Rahman, has been tasked to find out the facts. Member of the school’s managing committee, Mozammel Sarkar, and teacher representative, Zamal Hosen, are the two other members of the probe committee that has been asked to submit its report within 48 hours.
