Bangladesh enjoys bright image abroad, says Sirisena

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday appreciated Bangladesh's leadership in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) saying it has brightened Bangladesh's image abroad, reports UNB. Sirisena came up with the appreciation when Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury met him at a city hotel.

The Sri Lankan President thanked Dr Shirin Sharmin, also chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee, for

successfully holding the 136th CPA Assembly in Dhaka recently. Sirisena thanked the Speaker for forming Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group and said it will help identify the areas of cooperation and create new opportunities.

Terming Sri Lanka a friendly country of Bangladesh, Shirin Sharmin said the existing friendly relations between the two countries will further be strengthened through the visit, said a press release.

She said the parliament members of the two countries will be able to together under the newly formed parliamentary group.

The Speaker also hoped that economic and cultural ties between the two countries will further be strengthened between the two countries.

She highlighted the socio-economic development that Bangladesh witnessed so far and informed the Sri Lankan President that Bangladesh will become a middle-income country by 2021.

Recalling Sri Lanka's support in CPA and IPU elections, the Speaker said both the countries will be benefited economically through the signing of agreement and MoUs between the two countries.

Health Minister Mohammad Nasim also met the Sri Lankan President separately and discussed various issues of cooperation in the health sector.
