No adequate relief goods for flood-hit people: BNP

BNP yesterday alleged that the flood victims in the country's northwestern region are not getting adequate relief materials due to plundering and irregularities by 'ruling party men,' UNB reports.

"The flood situation in the country's northwestern region has seriously deteriorated due to rain and onrush of water from upstream India. People in 13 districts have been passing through an inhuman life for want of food and safe water. The flood victims are wailing for relief," said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Speaking at a press briefing at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he further said, "One or two ministers have returned to Dhaka only staging photo sessions in flood-hit areas. Though local administrations are providing some relief materials, Awami League leaders are looting those, depriving the victims."

The BNP leader urged their party leaders and activists to stand by the flood-hit people with relief materials immediately.

He said though the media is depicting the sufferings and sorrows of the flood victims, the government is least bothered about it. "The MP and ministers are spending their time in Dhaka comfortably. They don't feel any urge to stand beside people, as they aren't elected with people's vote."

Rizvi slammed the government for its failure to arrest the soaring prices of rice. "The rice price hike has broken the world record."

He came down hard on Food Minister Quamrul Islam for blaming some businessmen for the unusual hike of rice prices, saying he will not be able to hush up the government's failure by doing so.

The BNP leader alleged that the ruling party men are making their second homes in Malaysia by plundering public money. "We've come to know from the media that there has been a second-home construction spree among influential people. Around 3,546 second homes have been made in Malaysia by Bangladeshis."
