Quader urges media to publish objective news

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday called upon the media to publish objective news to ensure the credibility of the press.

Criticising journalists, Quader said: “You should do objective journalism. You ought to cross-check any information before writing a news item. You should concentrate on constructive criticism instead of indulging in personal attacks.”

The AL general secretary was addressing a news conference at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office, after attending a joint meeting of the party that discussed ways to make its August programmes a success.

He criticised the media for not publishing any news on the victory of AL candidates in local government elections held in Barishal district on Thursday.

He said if the BNP candidates had won the polls, all media outlets would have published the news.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said the AL was very strong at the grassroots level. A party strong at the grass-roots level would not be defeated in the national elections, he added.

Replying to a question on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s visit to London, Quader said the government would not prevent her from going abroad.

He, however, urged Khaleda Zia not to weave any conspiracy against the country and its people from abroad. “And if she does anything like that, it'll soon come to light as it is the era of the media,” he said.

Quader said the BNP would immediately join the next general election if the AL opposed its participation. “But we want the BNP to join the next polls. They should not repeat their mistake of boycotting the polls,” he added.

The AL general secretary also announced the party’s month-of-mourning programmes at the press conference. He called upon party leaders and workers to observe them spontaneously.  He also warned party functionaries and leaders of the AL's associate organisations not to raise money from common people for holding the programmes in August.

AL joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanok, organising secretaries AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Ahmed Hossain, deputy office secretary Biplob Barua, along with the presidents and secretaries of the party's Dhaka North city unit and South city unit, were present at the news conference.
