Qatar crush Bangladesh U-23 team

Sports Reporter

Bangladesh Under-23 national football team suffered their successive second defeat ahead of their AFC age group competition when they went down to Qatar by 3-0 on Thursday night in Doha.

Bangladesh, who began their preparation matches with a solitary goal defeat at the hands of Nepal on June 11 in Kathmandu, conceded the second defeat in Doha on their way to Palestine to take part in the AFC U-23 qualifiers.

Bangladesh team will stay in Doha today and tomorrow before their departure for Palestine on July 16.  Qatar led the first by 2-0 with scoring on 14 and 30 minutes while added another one on 63rd minute.

Andrew Ord, the head coach of Bangladesh team, who made his debut as a coach against Nepal, in his post match reactions said that his side will improve from those two practice matches and wants to make history from this tournament.

Ord said, “The two games have been vital without them (those two matches) we would have had no chance in Palestine. We beat the champions of Bangladesh and controlled the game but now we are outside in the real football world. I’m sure we will improve from these games it's the only way to test yourself against higher level opponents. Bangladesh have never won a game at this U-23 tournament level so our goal is to create history and bring a victory back from the championships.”

About his counter attack strategy with the impact of midfield and conceding the 3-0 defeat, the English born Australian said, “We did play counter attack and restricted  Qatar to very few chances in first half as well as our players breaking away dangerously sometime.”

“However you have to remember that Qatar have some excellent players. They have all the resources and were very well prepared. They played in a very competitive tournament before this game and when we lost concentration or got tired they punished our mistakes.”

“In the second half we actually pushed them back for 20 minutes and trapped Qatar in their own half but they produced a move, a real class and quality, to score the third goal and that is what separates us.”

Ord, whether found his team combination and the starting line up and the changes in the squad that played in Nepal said, “Every game we play, I get to know the players a little better which is helpful. We had to make lot of changes as playing a game 48 hours earlier and having a flight means we had to rotate the squad a lot.”
