Tourist spot to be set up in Jamalpur: Mirza Azam

State Minister for Textile and Jute Mirza Azam yesterday said a tourist spot will be set up to draw attention of tourists in the district.
The state minister said this while exchanging views with local public representatives and government officials on building tourism spot at circuit house in the district.
He said,“We can use a large portion of char areas instead of agricultural land to establish the tourist hub”.
Mirza Azam directed the tourism department officials to find out land to establish tourist spot here.
He also said a project involving Tk six thousand crore would be taken to dredge Brahmaputra River to make it suitable for transportation.
Bangladesh Tourism Corporation Chairman Akhtaruzzaman Kabir Khan, Deputy Commissioner, Jamalpur Ahmed Kabir, Deputy Commissioner, Sherpur, Dr Mollick Anwar Hossain, Jamalpur District Council Chairman Faruk Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer, Jamalpur District Council, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Jamalpur Municipality Mayor Mirza Sakhawatul Alam Mony,Vice-president of District Awami League Syed Atiqur Rahman Sana and Jamalpur Press Club President Azizur Rahman, among others, spoke in the meeting.
Two killed in boat capsize

Two school going students were killed as a boat capsized in the Mahananda River at Ghoraoakhia union in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Masud Rana, 11, son of Bablu Ali and Wahed Ali, 15, son of Anarul Islam, residents of Pardhumi Hayatpur village of the upazila.
Nurul Islam, deputy director of Chapainawabganj Fire Service, said that a grass-laden boat carrying 10 passengers, including Masud and Wahed, sank in the river adjacent to Ansarer ghat area around 9am, leaving the duo missing.
Later, a diver team of Rajshahi Fire Service rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies around 1pm.
Fugitive death row convict held
Bagerhat: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an absconding death-row convict from Chandipur Bazar area in Morelganj upazila on Thursday night, reports UNB.
Company Commander Lt Col Jahidul Kabir of Khulna Rab-6 said that tipped off, a team of Rab conducted a drive around 11:30 pm and arrested Ilius Sheikh, 48, son of Asmat Sheikh of Chandipur village.
Separate courts of the district sentenced him to death and life term imprisonment in 2011 for killing his brother in 1999 and neighbour in 2004 respectively.
He went into hiding in 2005.
Man kills father, commits suicide in Jessore

A man committed suicide by hanging himself from a mango tree after killing his father at Jamalpur village in Bagherpara of Jessore district on Thursday noon.
Manjurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bagherpara police station said Shohag, 30, son of Rostam Ali, 60, of the area hit his father’s head with a grubber following an altercation over a land-related dispute around 2:30pm, leaving him critically injured.
Later, locals rescued him and sent him to Jessore General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 3:30pm.
Shohag killed himself by hanging himself with a towel from a mango tree near his home after hearing the news of his father’s death.
Police believe that Shohag killed himself out of regret at killing his father, the OC added.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital.
Rehana Parveen, a local UP member, said Shohel, another son of Rostam Ali, married willingly eight years ago.
Rostam Ali wanted to build a home for Shohel and his family on land adjacent to the home.
Shohag did not take this kindly and got into an altercation with Rostam, at one stage hitting out with the spade, and connecting with his father’s cranium.
Masudul Islam, an intern doctor at Jessore General Hospital, said Rostam likely died from the hit to his head.
A murder case and an unnatural death case were filed with the police station, the OC said.
2 killed in road accident
Narsingdi: Two people were killed and five others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Khalapara in Shibpur upazila early yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Malek, 32, and Alauddin, 40, driver of the microbus.
The accident took place around 3:30 am when a Sylhet-bound microbus from Dhaka, carrying seven people, dashed a stationary truck from behind, killing the two on the spot and injuring five others, said in-charge of Itakhola highway police camp Hafizur Rahman.
The injured were taken to Narsingdi General Hospital while the bodies were sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
36 arrested in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: Police, in special drives from Thursday night to this morning, arrested 36 persons including three drug traders and recovered 15 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from eight upazilas of the district, reports BSS.
District police officials said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
During the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 10 persons, Kalaroa police arrested six including one drug trader with five bottles of Phensidyl syrup, Tala Police six, Kaliganj police two, Assasuni police four, Patkelghata police three accused, Debhata police three including two drug traders with 10 bottles of Phensidyl syrup and Shyamnagar police arrested two accused. Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons.
