The first consignment of rice laden ship carrying 20,000 tonnes of rice imported from Vietnam arrived yesterday at outer anchorage of Chittagong Port, reports BSS.
The Directorate of Food confirmed that the ship carrying 20,000 tonnes of rice anchored at the ‘B Anchorage’ of port at 11 am on Thursday.
The officials of Food department collected the specimen of the rice for laboratory test at 2 pm yesterday, sources said.
The unloading of rice will be started after laboratory clearance, the source added.
Abul Hossain, managing director of the concerned shipping agent also confirmed that MV Vissai VCT 05, carrying 20,000 tonnes of rice, anchored at the outer anchorage of the port at around 11.10 am.
Jahirul Islam, controller of Directorate of Food in Chittagong expected that next consignments will arrive in Chittagong port on July 18 and the third will arrive on July 22.
Bangladesh decided to import 250,000 tonnes of rice from Vietnam under a government-to-government deal in responding the shortage of rice in local market due to flooding in haor areas destroyed crops, Jahirul added.
