Youth killed in road accident
An youth was killed and nine others received injury in a road accident on Chittagong-Coxs Bazar highway in Shahgody Market area under Patiya upazila yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Akterurzzaman Mukul, 45, son of Abu Taher, an assistant manager of a private firm in Agrabad Commercial area, hailed from Jongolkhain area under Patiya upazila of the district.
Police said ten pedestrians, including Aktururzzaman, were critically injured after a speedy passenger bus knocked them from behind, losing its control over its steering on Chittagong-Coxs Bazar highway in Shahgody Market area under Patiya upazila around 8.30 am.
Locals rushed them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the attending doctors declared Aktururzzaman dead, CMCH police outpost sources said.
The conditions of nine injured people are out of danger, the sources added.
The body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Military Dental Center opens
A Military Dental Center was inaugurated on Wednesday at Dhaka Cantonment to provide better service to the patients.
Commandant Brigadier General Golam Mohiuddin inaugurated the dental centre as the chief guest, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release.
He also planted saplings and prayed for the progress of the center. Other army persons of different ranks were present at the time.
5 personalities get award
Five cultural personalities in Rajshahi were awarded in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the cultural field.
The award winning persons are: Abdul Kayum (Fine Arts), Altaf Hossain (Folk Culture), Sushanta Kumar Ghosh (Folk Song), Md Kamal (Recitation) and Minhaj Uddin (Photography).
Dancer Bazler Rahman Badal was also given special honour on the occasion.
Shilpakala Academy gave the District Shilpakala Award-2016 formally in a function held in its auditorium here on Wednesday.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman and Social Worker Shaheen Akter Rainy addressed the ceremony as chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioners Parvej Raihan and Md Salah Uddin and Cultural Officer of Shilpakala Academy Asaduzzaman Sarker also spoke.
View-exchange meeting held
Eid re-union and a view exchange meeting with newly elected chairman and members of Gazipur district council was held at its training centre hall room on Thursday.
Chairman of Gazipur district council and former vice president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Mohammed Aktaruzzaman was the chief guest. Deputy commissioner of Gazipur Dr Dewan Mohammed Humayun Kabir, chief executive officer of Gazipur district council Ali Ahsan, acting superintendent of Gazipur police Mohammed Solaiman, panel chairman and newly elected member of Gazipur district council SM Muksed Alam spoke in the programme.
Two jailed for drug addiction
A mobile court in Rajshahi yesterday has sentenced two persons to six months imprisonment each on charge of drug-addiction.
The convicts were identified as Ansar Ali, 40 and Masud Rana, 38.
A police team conducted an anti-drug raid in Binodpur area under Bagha Upazila in the district this noon and found them taking hemp at a nearby mango garden.
The team arrested them red-handed and picked them up to the police station.
Afterwards, they were produced before a mobile court. Based oncircumstantial evidence, Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hamidul Islam found them guilty and handed down the verdict.
