Zamir elected member of OIC's rights commission

Bangladesh's candidate Muhammad Zamir has been elected member of the OIC's Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), based in Jeddah, for a tenure of three years, starting from February 2018.

The IPHRC has 18 members and nine rotating members, three each from three geographical groups—Arab, Asia, Africa—were elected.

In the Asian group, five countries—Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Pakistan—earlier nominated their candidates.

In the election in Abidjan on 11 July, 17 out of 18 Asian countries took part. Turkmenistan was not present. Candidates of Bangladesh, Turkey and Uzbekistan were elected to the IPHRC through secret ballot for the next three years. Arab and African groups also elected their candidates.

Muhammad Zamir, former ambassador and former chief information commissioner, also served at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah.

Member states of the Asian Group in the OIC are Afghanistan, Albenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brunei, Guyana, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Suriname, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
