Two legendary music exponent, teacher and researcher of the country, Suddhin Das and Dr Karunamaya Goswami, who passed away recently within a very short gap, were remembered through music and reminiscing. In this connection, Bengal Foundation arranged a commemorative programme at the Chhayanaut Auditorium in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Tuesday.
In the beginning of the programme, a one-minute silence was observed in memory of the two music exponents.
Veteran cultural personalities Kamal Lohani and the editor of Kali O Kolom Abul Hasnat discussed on the life and work of Sudhin Das and Karunamaya Goswami.
During the second segment of the programme, Mofizur Rahman performed song. His first rendition was Kazi Nazrul Islam’s ‘Nilambari Shari Pori’, and then, he rendered the song ‘Jhoro Jhoro Bari Jhore Ombor Bapiya’.
The second singer of the programme was Nasima Shahin, who came up with the rendition of ‘Sajher Pakhira Firilo Kulay’ and ‘Tumi Jokhon Esechile’.
In between the performance of music, eminent artist Syed Jahangir recalled the memory of two great music exponents.
Then again, Iqbal Sumon rendered the songs ‘Keno Phoote, Keno Kusum Jhore Jay’ and ‘Biday Sondhya Asilo Oi. Next, Laisa Ahmed Lisa performed the songs of Rabindranath Tagore. She sang the popular numbers like ‘Pothe Chole Jete Jete’, ‘Dhay Jeno Mor Sokol Bhalobasa’. Besides, she also performed a song of Atul Prasad Sen, ‘Badal Jhuma Jhuma’.
The final performer of the programme was Khairul Anam Shakil, who rendered the songs ‘Jotoi Dohona Tumi’ and ‘Shyama Namer’.
The artistes at the entire programme were accompanied by Iftekhar Alam Pradhan Dollar on the tabla, Doultur Rahman on keyboard and Asit Biswas on esraj and Nazmul Alam Jharu on mandira.
The event was moderated by director general of Bengal Foundation Luva Nahid Choudhury.
To note, born in Bagichagaon in Comilla, Sudhin Das was a Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet musician. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak by the government. He enrolled as a regular Nazrul Sangeet performer at Pakistan Betar in 1948. After the death of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, he started setting down the original notations of Nazrul’s songs from gramophone records with the help of his wife Neelima Das, who is also a prominent Nazrul Sangeet artiste. Nazrul Academy published the first book with the original notations of 25 Nazrul Sangeet in 1985. Later, Nazrul Institute published 33 more books. The Ekushey Padak-winning singer breathed his last on June 27, 2017.
On the other hand, Karunamaya Goswami was born in 1942 in Mymensingh district. Goswami completed his PhD on the topic ‘Bangla Kabyo-geetir Dharaye Kazi Nazrul Islam-er Sthan’ from the University of Dhaka in 1988. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2012 by the government of Bangladesh for his contribution to fine arts. He is known as a Nazrul Geeti exponent. Goswami died on 30 June 2017, aged 75.
