Tamim denies falling victim to ‘hate crime’

Bangladesh hard-hitting opener Tamim Iqbal dismissed the speculation what was published on Wednesday, stating that he returns home from London due to his personal reason.

The 28-year-old stroke-maker went to United Kingdom (UK) to play for English County cricket club, Essex Eagles, on Saturday (July 8) and left London not completing his eight-game stint.

Tamim got down for Essex on Sunday in his opening game, wherein his club suffered a seven-wicket loss to Kent. Behind his abrupt exit after playing just one match for Essex was personal reason as Tamim said.

It has been published in some local media that Tamim severed ties with Essex Eagles because of ‘hate crime’ on him and his family that created a furore amongst  thousands of fans, well-wishers, cricket lovers of Tamim and Bangladesh cricket.

It was learnt from the report of the a Bangladesh daily that the incident happened when Tamim and his family were out for dining while some assailants were chasing them and even attempted to throw acid on them.

“I want all my fans and well wishers to know that I cut short my season with Essex to come back home early for personal reasons,” said Tamim Iqbal.

“Some media reported that we were the target of attempted hate crime. This is really not true,” Tamim wrote on his verified facebook page yesterday.

“England is one of my favorite places to play cricket and Essex have been entirely gracious even though I had to leave early,” he added.

The left-handed batsman, who scored 10,000-plus runs in all three formats for Bangladesh, thanked his fans and well-wishers across the world and expects to play again in English County in future.

“I thank all my fans and well wishers for their concern and messages and look forward to going back to England for future matches,” Tamim said.

The County Club- Essex Eagles- of course confirmed on Tuesday that their overseas player, Tamim Iqbal, left the club with immediate effect due to personal reasons.

When asked to know about Tamim’s sudden exit from London, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief executive officer (CEO) Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said that they got to know the news from media like you all.

But he said that they all should respect ‘privacy’ matter.

Tamim’s paternal uncle Akram Khan, who is director of Bangladesh Cricket Board and its cricket operation committee chairman, also avoiding the matter saying as personal matter.
