9 children die of ‘unknown fever’ in Ctg

Nine children reportedly died and 26 others fell ill of ‘an unknown fever’ at remote hilly area of Sonaichhori union under Sitakunda upazil in Chittagong over the past week.

The deceased were identified as Kanai Tripura, 5, Fukhti Tripura, 6, Janaiya Tripura, 7, Romapati Tripura, 8, Takipati Tripura, 12, Kachham Roy Tripura, 10, Rupali Tripura, 3, Hridoy Tripura, 8, and Krishan Tripura, 2.

Four of the children died of fever, according to Sitakunda Upazila Health Officer Dr SM Nurul Karim Rashed.

Karim said the children who caught the fever fell unconscious while shaking and then died.

“A total of 26 children were admitted to Foujdarhat TB Hospital. Of them, two were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Two experts’ teams from Dhaka and Chittagong are on their way to Sitakunda to evaluate the situation,” said Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr. Azizur Rahman Siddique.

"The reason behind the fever could be known once the experts examine the patients," the civil surgeon added.
