State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid yesterday said the government would install 2,60,000 prepaid gas meters in residential areas across the country by December 2018, reports BSS.
“With installation of prepaid meters for domestic use of natural gas, approximately 33 cubic meter gas would be saved from a double-burner oven per month,” he told this in the Jatiya Sangsad, while replying to a starred question from treasury bench member AKM Jahangir Hossain of Patuakhali-3.
The state minister said the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL) has targeted to install 2,00,000 prepaid meters under 35th Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) Loan Package of the Japanese government by December 2018.
Besides, the Karnaphuli Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) has signed an agreement with a contractor for setting up 60,000 prepaid gas meters in Chittagong by June 2018, he informed the House.
Nasrul said that the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited has already installed 4,500 prepaid gas meters in Mohammapur and Lalmatia areas of the capital under a pilot project, adding, “8,600 residential prepaid gas meters were set up in Dhaka city under an Asian Development Bank (ADB) financed project.”
However, the state minister said the state run gas companies have introduced 1,427 Electronic Volume Corrector (EVC) meters at consumers’ level till August 2015.
Of which TGTDCL installed 1,063 EVC meters, Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited (BGDCL) 125 EVC meters, Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) 180 EVC meters, Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (JGTDCL) 53 EVC meters and Pashchimanchal Gas Company Limited (PGCL) 6 EVC meters, he added.
