Saudi Arabia eases regulation for migrant workers

BSS

Saudi Arabia has eased a regulation allowing expatriate domestic workers change their employers if they fail to pay salary in time for three consecutive or intermittent months, Saudi media reports quoting a decision of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development (MoL).

According to the decision of the MoL, workers can also transfer from one employer to another in cases where the employer leased the services of the worker to others without the knowledge of the worker, or assigning him/her to work for non-relatives of the second degree, and in cases that prove the worker was commissioned to perform hazardous tasks that threaten his/her health and safety, reports BSS.

The worker can also change employer if he/she is abused, or a formal complaint by the worker exists against his/her employer.

The new employer will pay the transfer fees and costs of sheltering the worker during his/her stay in the shelter house, which amounts to SR150 ($40) per day, in accordance with the mechanism put in place by the ministry.

For further information and assistance employees can reach the MoL officials by calling customer service at 19911. They no longer need to visit the main labour office in Riyadh to have their inquiries answered and paperwork processed.
