Man ‘kills’ wife, granddaughter
A man allegedly stabbed his wife and four-month-old granddaughter in Nathpara area at Putibala union of Lohagara upazila on Tuesday night.
The deceased were identified as Pushpa Bala, 65, and his granddaughter Sangita Shil.
Mohammad Shahjahan, officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station, said that Pethan Shil stabbed his wife, granddaughter and daughter-in-law Moni Bala Shil around 9:30 pm over family feud, leaving duo dead on the spot and Moni Bala critically injured.
The injured was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
On information, police recovered the bodies and arrested Pethan Shil.
Air chief leaves for UK
Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar, BBP, ndc, acsc left Dhaka for UK on a five-day official visit on Tuesday.
During visit, Chief of Air Staff will attend “Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT)-2017 Ó in UK. He will also take part in “Air Power Conference” participated by Air Chiefs of different countries. During his stay in UK, Chief of Air Staff will discuss on professional matters with military and civil high officials.
It is expected that this visit will play an important role for strengthening the existing friendly relationship between Armed Forces of two countries.
AL meeting today
A meeting of the Awami League (AL) secretariat will be held at the political office of party president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city at 3 pm today.
In a statement yesterday, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader requested all concerned to attend the meeting on time.
Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, will chair the meeting, it said.
One arrested with 8,000 yaba tablets
A special team of detective branch (DB) of police has arrested a drug trader from Shanir Akhra are in the capital and recovered 8,000 yaba tablets from his possession.
“Acting on a tip off, a team of DB (west) division raided east side of the Shanir Akhra Bridge at around 8 pm on July 11 and arrested Md Imam Hossain, 19, red handed with 8000 yaba tablets,” a DMP release said.
Police said Imam and his associates collect yaba from Teknaf and bring those here in the capital to sell at high price.
Meanwhile, members of Jatrabari Police Station has arrested three robbers last night from Shanir Akhra area and recovered three knives from their possessions.
Six shops gutted in Ctg
At least six different kinds of shops were gutted in a fire at Shantirhat of Harualchari village under Fatikchhari upazila of the district in the early hours of Tuesday.
Fire Service and Civil Defence sources said the fire originated from an electric short-circuit of a shop in the area around 2.30 am and it quickly engulfed the surrounding shops.
Being informed, two units of firefighters from Fatikchhari Fire Station rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control around 4.30 am.
“Valuables worth about Taka four lakh were gutted in the fire,” fire zservice sources said, adding that none was, however, injured in the fire.
Memorial meeting on Fayza Haq today
The Daily Star will hold a memorial programme on eminent art critic, veteran journalist and teacher Fayza Haq at AS Mahmud Hall, The Daily Star at 5pm today, says a press release.
The artist community, art lovers, critics, friends, relatives and well-wishers of Fayza Haq are requested to attend the programme and share their fond memories of her. Fayza Haq, passed away on July 7.
