Seminar on population day held at DU
A seminar titled 'Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations' was held at Dhaka University on Tuesday, marking the World Population Day.
DU Population Sciences Department in collaboration with UNFPA arranged the seminar held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university.
DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique was present at the seminar as the chief guest.
Arefin Siddique said nearly 50 lakh child marriages are held in Bangladesh every year due to lack of proper education and awareness, which is why the population of Bangladesh is increasing gradually.
It is not possible to reduce the rate of population growth by distributing only birth control materials, said the VC, adding that public awareness is important for reducing population growth.
Presided over by Population Sciences Department chairperson Dr M Aminul Haque, the programme was attended, among others, by Dr Abu Jafar M Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, acting dean of Social Sciences faculty and founding Chairperson of Population Sciences Department Professor Dr AKM Nurun Nabi.
Chinese delegation meets DU VC
A six-member delegation of Yunnan Arts University (YAU), China today paid a courtesy call on Vice-chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office. Vice-President of the YAU Professor Chen Yanping led the delegation, said a press release in Dhaka on Tuesday.Other team members of the delegation were Professor Ji Qun, Professor Tang Yun, Miao Xiangyan, Yang Zhuo and Mong Mong Sho.
Dean of DU Fine Art Faculty Professor Nisar Hossain and some other faculty members were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, they discussed matters of mutual interest, specially the possibilities of undertaking joint academic and research programmes on music, dance and fine art by the two universities.
Exchanges of teachers and students between the two universities were also discussed at the meeting.
The Yunnan Arts University Vice-President expressed her willingness to provide scholarship to DU students for higher study in China.
They agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in this regard soon.
Professor Arefin apprised the guests of a brief history of Dhaka University as well as its academic and research activities.
Essay competition held at United International University
Department of Economics at United International University organised Inter School/College Essay Competition recently at the main campus of the university, says a press release.
The topic of the competition was ‘Potential Economic Impacts of the Padma Bridge”. Professor Mustafizur Rahman, distinguished fellow, CPD was present as the chief guest.
Students from classes IX-XII and O/A’level were eligible for the competition. All participants received certificates and gifts. Top 10 participants were invited to present their essays. Md Kaf Shahrier of Faujdarhat Cadet College won the first prize of Tk 50,000 for the best essay. Fawziyah Fariha of Feni Girls' Cadet College got the second prize of Tk 30,000 and Sibbir Ryan Prottoy of Faujdarhat Cadet College received the third prize of Tk 20,000. It was announced that the next year’s essay competition will be held in September – October 2018.
Registrar, heads of different departments, teachers, guardians, students and the invited guests were present in the programmes.
UGC-ministrial team attends workshop in Germany
A-three member UGC-ministerial delegation headed by Abdullah Al Naser Chowdhury, additional secretary, Ministry of Education attended a two-day long planning workshop on “German-Bangladesh Higher Education Network for Sustainable Textiles” recently at Gustav-Stresemann Institut, Langer Grabenweg 68, 53175 Bonn, Germany, says a press release.
The workshop was organised by GIZ (German Development Cooperation) in cooperation with DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). From UGC, Dr Md. Khaled, Secretary, attended the workshop. Other member was Rafiq Ahmed Siddiqui, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Planning. At the German end, Lars Gerold, Head of Development Cooperation of DAAD, his colleagues and Christian von, Mitzlaff, GIZ, Dhaka office attended the workshop.
