An incessant downpour throughout the day has paralysed the city life in Rajshahi yesterday.

The rainfall started at 1:25 am in the city and continuing without break till filling the report at 2pm. A heavy rain fall associated with thunder bolt started from the morning till 12noon. After that, intermittent rain and drizzling is continuing.

Low lying area of the city including Chhoto Bongram, Mollapara, Dingadoba, Mushroil, Sopura, Tikapara, Seroil, Baliapukur, Machuapara have been sub-merged due to water logging.

Pedestrians faced troubles while moving on city roads, as the roads became muddy due to the incessant rains. Most of the city dwellers confined themselves in their homes and very few transports plied the city roads, demanding high fares from the passengers.

There was recurrent rain fall in Rajshahi this year during the monsoon. Unlike last one decade, the rainy season seemed to reappear with its all features and grandeur in Rajshahi this year. As a result, of sufficient rain fall this year during monsoon, the ponds, ditches, beels and water bodies which remained dried up for years, have been filled with water.

According to Hydrology Officer of Rajshahi Water Development Board office, the water levels of both the River Padma and the Mohananda have slightly receded.

He further said, water has entered some low lying areas as well as some beel and char areas of the district but that is not posing any threat to the crops or habitation.

Ashraful Alam, In-charge of Rajshahi Meteorological Office, said there was 112.4 millimetre of rain fall was recorded in last 24 hours in Rajshahi. And the rain will continue till Thursday.

The hardship of poor people living at the shanties and thatched houses has been intensified. The slum dwellers at beside the railway tract and near the stadium are the worst hit by the incessant rainfall.
