A 25-year master plan for the overall development of Rajshahi University (RU) will be launched soon. Various infrastructure development projects of the university proposed under the plan await the government’s approval.
A number of infrastructure development plans, involving an estimated cost of around Tk. 3.63 billion (or Tk. 363 crore), will be implemented within the next four years.
The RU Master Plan will be undertaken to enable the institution compete with other universities of the world and improve the quality of students, official sources said. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) last year approved the funds required to implement such a project. Following the approval, along with adequate financial assistance from the respective ministries, the university will implement the projects soon.
A source in the university administration said the university faced an acute funds crunch. Besides, inadequate UGC funding hampered the RU’s development.
Despite the funds crunch, the university has drawn up various development and renovation plans. These include a 10-storied residential complex, a 20-storied central science building, ICT buildings, and 5-MW combined power stations.
Moreover, the modification of the building of the Sheikh Russell Model School, fourth science building, fourth arts building, Motihar Hall, and the remaining work of the agriculture faculty building will be completed in future.
Besides, under the 25-year master plan, a park and a cultural centre for the music and theatre department will be set up. The cafeteria will be modernised, campus streets will be widened, and a modern drainage system will be laid under the master plan.
To implement these projects, university experts have made a set of recommendations, including the generation of more income from internal resources and embarking on cost cuts, vice-chancellor Prof. Dr M Abdus Sobhan said.
The RU has an annual budget of Tk. 4.90 billion for the 2016–17 fiscal year.
