35 baby cobras killed, 70 more found
At least 35 baby cobras were killed in Natore while 70 were found in Kushtia yesterday and on Tuesday.
In Natore, at least 35 baby cobras were killed and 15 snake eggs destroyed at Madhnagar village in Naldanga upazila on Tuesday night, reports UNB.
Locals said Hasan Uddin Arinda, a resident of the village, found a snake roaming in his house at night and immediately killed it.
After a while, another snake appeared and he killed it too and found three holes inside the house from where the snakes were coming out.
Later, Hasan along with local people found 33 more snakes and killed those one by one. They also destroyed 15 eggs found in the holes.
However, the mother cobra managed to flee.
With this, a total of 293 cobras were killed in separate incidents in three districts in the last few days.
Earlier, 258 baby snakes were killed in Rajshahi and Satkhira.
Meanwhile in Kushtia, at least 70 baby cobras were found at a house of Chuniapara village in Khoksha upazila on Wednesday.
Monoj Thakur said they noticed some cobras on the veranda of their house on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, another baby cobra was spotted on the veranda, creating panic among the house inmates.
Later, the house owner called in a snake charmer from Satpakhiya village who dug the floor and found 18 baby cobras in a hole.
The snake charmer than found 52 more snakes in another place of the house. Each snake is 1-1.5 feet in length.
However, they failed to catch the mother cobra after digging many places around the house.
All the baby cobras were taken away by the snake charmer.
One held with 7 gold bars
JESSORE: Benapole Customs Authority arrested a man with seven gold bars from near Benapole Land Port Immigration Office here yesterday morning, reports BSS.
The arrested was Parvej Hossain, 30, son of Monir Hossain, resident of South Lakkhankhola village under Bandar Thana in Narayanganj district.
A team of the customs office nabbed Parvej from the area and recovered the gold bars after searching his body, said Mahamud Khan, an official of the office.
He tried to go India through the border, the official added.
Man to die for killing wife, daughter in Magura
Magura: A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife and daughter in 2011, reports UNB.
The condemned convict is Amirul Islam, 37, son of Sobhan Mollah of Choubaria village in Mohammadpur upazila.
According to the prosecution, Kabita Khatun, 25, and her daughter Jamila Khatun were beaten to death by Amirul Islam following a family feud on June 5, 2011.
Local people handed Amirul over to police the following day. Victim’s father Rafiqullah filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station.
After examining the records and witnesses, District and Session’s Judge Mafizur Rahman handed down the verdict.
Missing girl rescued
FARIDPUR: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rescued a teen aged girl after five months of her missing and arrested one woman in this connection on Tuesday afternoon, reports BSS.
The arrested was identified as Mosammat Morjina, a human trafficker of Nobogram Koroitola village in Manikgonj district.
The missing girl is identified as Sabina Yasmin, 16, hailing from Saltha upazila of the district.
A team of RAB led by additional superintendent of police (ASP) and also the company commander of RAB-8 Roish Uddin conducted the raid around 4pm at a brothel near Haji Shariatuallah Bazar in the town and rescued the missing girl. She was missing around five months ago.
Woman held with firearms

Police arrested an alleged drug peddler with 10 foreign made airguns at Barobazar in Jhenidah on Tuesday night.
The detainee is Antora Khatun, 23, of Chougachha upazila in Jessore.
According to sub inspector of Barobazar police station Tariqul Islam, on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Antora while she and her cohorts were carrying the firearms on an easy bike.
Three of the cohorts, including her husband, managed to flee the location, said the SI.
Antora has long been involved in smuggling operations, Tariqul added, saying that a case was filed in this connection.
Woman killed ‘by son’

A ‘drug edict’ man allegedly killed his mother in Koalaghat area of the district town on Tuesday night.
The victim was identified as Jayeda Begum, 45, wife of Sharif Arab Ali of the town.
Locals said Sharif Hossain, 30, a rickshaw-puller, used to quarrel with his mother Jayeda and beat her as she refused to give him money for buying drugs.
Around 8 pm on Tuesday, Sharif had an altercation with his mother over the issue. At one stage, he first hit her in the head with a brick and later chopped her with a dao indiscriminately, leaving her injured critically.
She was taken to Chandpur General Hospital where doctors declared her dead, said officer-in-charge of Chandpur Model Police Station Waliullah Oli.
On information, police rushed in and arrested Sharif.
