SC cancels bail of Cox’s Bazar ex-DC, ADC

UNB

The Supreme Court yesterday cancelled the bail of former deputy commissioner M Ruhul Amin and ex-additional deputy commissioner Jafar Alam of Cox's Bazar in a case filed for embezzling about Tk 20 crore from Matarbari coal-fired power plant project, reports UNB.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order after hearing the petition.

Advocate SM Rejaul Karim argued for the accused while advocate Khurshid Alam represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Khurshid Alam said the High Court earlier granted bail to the former government officials in the case. The Appellate Division today (Monday) scrapped the bail following petitions challenging the HC order.

Following the apex court order, Ruhul Amin and Jafar Alam will have to surrender before the trial court, said the ACC lawyer.

Former DC Ruhul Amin and ADC Jafar misappropriated about Tk 20 crore in the name of giving compensation to some 25 fake shrimp enclosures for the implementation of Matharbari Coal-fired Power Plant project in Maheshkhali upazila during their tenure.

On November 20, 2014, AKM Kaisurul Islam Chowdury, a businessman, filed the case against some 28 people, including the DC and the ADC, with Cox’s Bazar District and Session Judge’s court.

Later, the court took cognisance of the charges and asked the ACC to investigate the corruption allegation. On April 23 last, the ACC submitted a charge-sheet against 36 people. Later, Ruhul Amin and Jafar Alam secured bail from the HC.

Later, the ACC filed a leave-to-appeal challenging the HC order.
