Coach appointment held back until Kohli has his say: Sourav

NEW DELHI: The much-awaited appointment of the next coach of the Indian men's cricket team has been deferred to an unconfirmed date, with the BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman seeking Indian captain Virat Kohli's inputs before announcing the man to replace Anil Kumble in the most high-profile coaching role in the sport, reports Times of India.

Addressing the media soon after the CAC conducted interviews with five candidates inside the corridors of the BCCI headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Ganguly told reporters that Kohli, who is currently out of the country, had to be apprised of their decision before the next coach could be revealed.

“The announcement has been put on hold. We will speak to Virat Kohli first, there is no hurry. Let him come back from America,” said Ganguly. “Virat has not given any inputs. The CAC will go out of the picture once Virat is spoken to. The Sri Lanka tour is not the objective, long term objectives are kept in mind. The process is concluded, nobody else will be in the reckoning.”

Ganguly confirmed that former India allrounder and captain Ravi Shastri, who was team director of the Indian men's cricket team from August 2014 to April 2016, Virender Sehwag, former Australian allrounder Tom Moody, current Afghanistan coach Lalchand Rajput and former Pakistan and Bangladesh coach and director of West Indies cricket Richard Pybus were all interviewed on Monday.

Ganguly and Laxman were present inside the corridors of the board headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, while Tendulkar joined via video conference from the UK. Barring Sehwag, none of the applicants were physically present at the BCCI headquarters, instead being interviewed over Skype.

Ganguly also stated that the same support staff as for the recent West Indies series would travel to Sri Lanka for the series starting July 26.
