Amid uncertainty over Australia’s visit, Bangladesh began their practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday, primarily focusing on their fitness.
The home of cricket however was buzzing with the national players after eight months as a total of 22 cricketers, amongst 29, joined the camp on the first day. Of the seven players who were absent in the training, five (Liton Das, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Saifuddin, Abul Hasan Raju and Tanbir Hyder) remain the part of HP Unit that is playing against an Australian provincial team currently. Opener Tamim Iqbal is set to miss the first part of the practice camp due to his fixture with English County Club Essex while fast bowler Rubel Hossain is yet to recover from the injury.
The fast bowler has been forced to undergo a jaw surgery and was sidelined for at least a month after a freak collision with a door at the hotel where the team was staying in Birmingham, England. The team official however informed he could join the team within a week.
As the players joined the camp, the fitness trainer Mario Villaverayan took the movement competency test after which they gathered in the Indoor complex of the stadium to have beep and screen test. For some days the players will do level one strength test. Then they will go through a level two strength test.
This is the first time in the last 10 months that Villavarayan got the chance to work with the players’ fitness. Last time they attended the fitness training was September, 2016.
“They have been in good shape,” said Villavarayan after conducting the first day’s session. “What was the good thing was that their mentality. Every player is focused on their fitness. And when they were not in the cricket, they concentrated on doing something to get fit. This is what keeps them in good shape.”
“If you observe, you will see the players enhance their ability to score big runs and spend huge time in the crease. In the last eight months, most of the player played big innings. Because they are fit, they are now able to play big innings.”
The fitness session, guided by Villavarayan will be the main focus in the rest of this month. Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha will return to Bangladesh at the end of July and the skill training will start once the Sri Lankan joins the camp.
The fitness session began basically keeping the series against Australia in mind, although it is uncertain as Australian players payment dispute with the Cricket Australia is yet to be resolved.
After the series against Australia, Bangladesh will visit South Africa for a full series. There is no doubt that as far as fitness is concerned, the Australian and South African players set an example.
Villavarayan believed Bangladesh players could match with the fitness of Aussie and Proteas players.
“It is very challenging. They are super professional and super fit. But the way our players are progressing, it is possible to match with them.”
