Protest continues at JU

A group of students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) brought out a silent procession on the campus yesterday demanding withdrawal of case against 56 students who were allegedly involved in vandalising Vice Chancellor’s residence on May 27.

They brought out a procession under the banner of ‘Teacher-Student Unity Platform’ wearing black handkerchief on face from the JU Social Science Faculty and ended at the administrative building of the university parading different street on campus.

After ending the procession, Prof Sayeed Ferdous of Anthropology, Prof Anwarullah Bhuyan of Philosophy, Prof Kamrul Ahsan, Prof Nasim Akhter Hossain of Government and Politics department spoke in a short gathering among the teachers.

Among the students, President of JU Cultural Alliance Touhid Hasan Shuvro and President of JU Socialist Student Front Sushmita Morium spoke.

The speakers urged the university authority to withdraw case against student as early as possible.

Besides, they also demanded to reform the investigative body by the university with impartial personalities.

Among others, Chairman of Anthropology Prof Mirza Taslima, Associate Prof of Philosophy Ryhan Rayne and Anisa Parvin Joli also participated in procession.

Over 250 students of different faculties and institutes join the procession.

Earlier, on May 26, two students of the university NazmulHasan Rana and Arafat Hossain were killed as a bus hit a human hauler on Dhaka-Aricha highway near the campus when they had retuned to campus from Tabligh.

Following the incident, the general students had been demonstrating following the death of their two fellows and made blockade at the Dhaka-Aricha highway where police charged baton, and fired tear shell, rubber bullets.
