UP chairman among six lands in jail

Sherpur: A court here on Friday sent six people, including a union parishad chairman, to jail in a case filed over the rape attempt on a minor girl in Nalitabari upazila.
The accused are Nayabeel UP chairman Yunus Ali Dewan, also joint convener of Nalitabari upazila unit of BNP, two UP members Azharul Islam and Shahjahan Ali, Azizul Haque, imam of Mouakura Jam-e-Mosque who made the rape attempt, two mosque committee members Mahmud and Ismail.
Judge of the district court Mominunnesa Khanam passed the order after a team of Nalitabari Police Station produced them before the court in the afternoon, said sub-inspector of the court police Abdul Azizi.
The court is likely to hear on Sunday the remand petition filed by the investigation officer for Azizul and bail prayers of the accused, the SI said.
Mouakura Jam-e- Mosque imam and maktab teacher Azizul Haque allegedly tried to rape the Class-II girl on July 4.
Following the incident, UP Chairman Yunus Ali Dewan and two members along with mosque committees fined Tk 25,000 to Azizul and sacked him from the mosque through arbitration on Wednesday night.
However, the victims family was not satisfied at the trial and demanded justice but in vain.
On Thursday night, the girls mother filed a case against seven people, including the UP chairman, with Nalitabari Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Officer-in-charge of the police station M Fasihur Rahman said they arrested the six people for allegedly hushing up the alleged rape attempt on the eight-year-old girl.
