Benapole transport strike withdrawn hours after enforcement

Jessore: Several hours after enforcing an indefinite transport strike at Benapole, workers withdrew it following a meeting with local Awami League leaders, reports UNB.

Shahidul Islam, manager of ‘Sohag Paribahan’ said that transport workers sat in a meeting with local leaders of Awami League and officials of Benapole Port Police Station around 11:00 am.

In the meeting, the people involved in the incident signed a bond and expressed their sorrow over the matter.

They also vowed that they would not repeat this type of incident in future.

Earlier, the transport workers enforced indefinite strike from 7:00 am, protesting vandalism in a bus counter and assault on four transport workers.

Transport workers said leaders and activists of Benapole Pouro Chhatra League brought out a procession at Benapole port on Friday afternoon aiming to make their district conference a great success.

When the procession reached Benapole Paribahan stand, the BCL activists locked into an altercation with a worker Mohon of ‘Greenline Paribahan’. At one stage, they beat Mohon.

As the bus driver Jamal, supervisor Alal, helper Liakat came to rescue Mohon, they also came under attack by the Chhatra League men.

Later, the BCL activists also vandalised Greenline Paribahan counter.

Protesting the incidents, the workers enforced the strike demanding punishment of the attackers.

Yesterday morning, the workers placed a barricade on the main road of Benapole, halting the vehicular movement.

A number of vehicles carrying goods and passengers from India remain stranded at the port following the strike which created immense

sufferings.
