The flood situation in the northern districts has worsened, with the waters of the Jamuna flowing above the danger level. People of at least 51 union parishads in Sirajganj, Kurigram and Tangail districts have been marooned following the influx of fresh floodwaters. Besides, the residents of Sariakandi in Bogra and Bahadurabad in Jamalpur districts have also been seriously been affected by floodwaters. New areas are being flooded in different parts of the country, but the flood-affected people are yet to get any relief materials, the flood victims alleged.
“The waters of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma river systems will rise further in the next three days, while the Surma and Kushiyara are showing a falling trend,” Sazzad Hossain, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), told The Independent yesterday.
The Jamuna’s waters are flowing above the danger level at Bahadurabad, Sariakandi, Kazipur and Serajganj points, the Surma’s waters at Kanaighat point, and the Kushiyara’s waters at Amalshid, Sheola and Jariajanjail points, he added.
Residents of Kazipur, Shajadpur, Chowhali, Belkuchi and Sadar upazilas under Sirjganj from 28 union parishads have been seriously affected by the floodwaters.
“Water is now flowing 15cm above the danger level in Sirajganj district. The rising trend of the water would continue for the next five to seven days. We have increased the monitoring system to protect the flood protection embankments. We are also dumping sandbags at risky points to save Sirajganj town from erosion,” Sirajganj BWDB’s executive engineer Hasan Imam told this correspondent.
The flood-affected people have taken shelter on the flood protection embankments after leaving their homes.
Besides, the villagers of Chilmari, Ulipur, Rowmari, Rajibpur and Sadar upazilas of Kurigram district, including over 100 villages adjacent to ‘char’ and ‘char’ island areas, have also become victim to floodwaters.
Over 1.5 lakh people from 20 union parishads in the area have been marooned because of the floodwaters.
Kurigram district commissioner Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan said they have made preparations to help the flood victims. “Water has entered some lowland areas, but has not created any severe flooding. We have made all preparations, including medical teams, to tackle the flood,” he said in reply to a query.
Meanwhile, people of two upazilas—Bhuiyanpur and Gopalpur under Tangail district—have been affected by the fresh floodwaters. Some two lakh people under three union parishads of the two upazilas have been marooned by floodwaters.
“Water is coming from the upstream through the Jamuna. Now water is flowing 8cm above the danger level at Nalin point,” Tangail BWDB executive engineer Shajahan Siraj told this correspondent.
In Islampur, Dewanganj, Melandaha, Sarishabari and Madarganj upazilas of Jamalpur, vast tracts of land have gone under water, affecting thousands and damaging homes and crops, adds Our Correspondent.
In Islampur upazila, 10 metric tonnes of rice will be distributed among about 5,000 affecetd people, said UNO ABM Ahsanul Mamun.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in the north-eastern Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya. This may spell further trouble for people downstream of the Brahmaputra, the flow of which becomes the Jamuna from Bahadurabad in Jamalpur.
