AGENCIES, MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo has held a secret meeting with PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi, according to reports in Spain.
The pair discussed a world-record move from Real Madrid on a yacht in Ibiza, claim OK Diario.
Portugal skipper Ronaldo is enjoying a break on the Spanish island following his country’s run to the Confederations Cup semi-finals.
He missed the third-place playoff to spend time with his newborn twins.
The Real star was strongly tipped to move away from the Bernabeu this summer after being accused of tax fraud.
Ronaldo, 32, asked agent Jorge Mendes to seal him a dream move to Old Trafford.
But Real president Florentino Perez told esRadio: “I know Cristiano is angry, but I think he will stay.
“I haven’t spoken with him. The only thing that has to be done is to wait and talk after the Confederations [Cup].”
Ronaldo’s management company Gestifute insisted their client has acted in accordance with British and Spanish tax laws.
They said: “Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid in 2009 under the Law of Impatriots, legislation in force and prevailing then, and he was taxed only for the incomes that were attributable to Spain.
“The Prosecutor’s Office says that the player declared the income derived from the transfer of image rights as income from movable capital to evade taxes.
“The laws applicable to Cristiano Ronaldo are the Personal Income Tax Law and the Impatriots Law.
“In Articles 25.4 and 13.1.F3, respectively, it is clear that the player’s income for image rights is considered to be as movable capital and will only exceptionally be income from an economic activity.
“The player declared to the Tax Authorities 100 per cent of the part attributable to Spain of Tollin’s income and his image rights during the periods 2009-2014 and 2015-2020.
“All this according to the criteria set by the United Kingdom Treasury to determine that part of the image transfer revenue was originated in that country, which shows that there was no intention to defraud.
“In conclusion: the declared amount can be discussed, but it is clear that the football player did not try to evade taxes.”
REAL VS MLS All-Stars
In another development it was reported in Chicago Tribune on Thursday night, Major League Soccer announced the first 11 MLS All-Stars who will play in the game against Real Madrid on Aug. 2 at Soldier Field.
But what many fans want to know is this: Will Cristiano Ronaldo be there too? And will he play? Neither Real Madrid nor Major League Soccer will say if Ronaldo, one of the world's great soccer players, will be in that game.
The striker's last game was June 28 in Portugal's loss to Chile in the Confederations Cup semifinal, which would give him more than a month before the MLS All-Star Game.
He skipped the Confederations Cup third-place game after the birth of his twin boys last week.
Prior to the All-Star game, Real Madrid has three other preseason matches in the U.S.: July 23 vs. Manchester United at Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium; July 26 vs Manchester City at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and then July 29 vs Barcelona at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo is also scheduled to testify in Madrid on July 31 in a tax fraud case where he is accused of hiding income from the tax authorities. It's not clear how that might affect his availability.
For some perspective, last June Argentina would not confirm if Lionel Messi would play for Argentina against Panama in the Copa American Centenario match at Soldier Field. He entered the game in the second half and scored three goals.
Real Madrid is coached by Zinedine Zidane, the former star who played for Real Madrid. In addition to Ronaldo, Real Madrid also has stars Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos, Kiko Casilla and Pepe.
This marks the first time a team from Spain's La Liga will appear in the MLS All-Star Game. The MLS All-Stars have previously faced clubs from England’s Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga, Italy's Serie A, Mexico's Liga MX and the Scottish Premier League.
MLS says it will host several events across Chicago the week of the game, concerts, player appearances, and matches featuring young players from across the league.
The first MLS All-Star Game was in 1996 at Giants Stadium. The 2006 game was played at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, home to the Chicago Fire.
