Thailand to back Bangladesh

Thailand yesterday assured Bangladesh of extending its support to the country's efforts to be the member of regional forums, including Mekong-Ganges Cooperation Forum and East West Economic Corridor, reports UNB.

Visiting Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai gave the assurance during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

The Thai minister also assured Bangladesh that they will stand by it to be the sectoral partner of the Asean.

He paid rich tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and thanked the Prime Minister for commissioning Bangabandhu Chair at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand.

The Chair will be inaugurated jointly by foreign ministers of the two countries, Ihsanul Karim said.

Pramudwinai stressed the importance of exchanging more high-level visits, and invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit Thailand at her convenient time.

He apprised the Prime Minister of the experimental 'goat project' of Thailand initiated by Thai Princess Sirin Dhron with Bangladeshi 'Black Bengal' species.

The Prime Minister sought more investment from Thailand in the Special Economic Zones being set up across the country, particularly in the food processing sector and tourism.

She said Thailand has so far invested US$ 1.5 billion in Bangladesh's various sectors while annual bilateral trade between the two countries now stands at around US$ 1 billion.

Referring to the government decision's to import rice from Thailand, Hasina extended her thanks to the government of Thailand in this regard, saying, "We don't have any food crisis, but we're increasing our stock as a precaution."

She also underscored the need for boosting the bilateral trade between the two countries alongside strengthening the economic relations.

The Prime Minister paid her tributes to late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej and reiterated her felicitation to the new King of Thailand Vajiralongkorn for his accession to the throne.

She also recalled the visit of Thai Princess Sirindhorn to Bangladesh in 2010 as she then visited Gaibandha to see for herself projects on climate change. "Bangladesh will be happy to receive her (Thai Princess) in the early of 2018."

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Senior PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum, Bangladesh Ambassador to Thailand Saida Muna Tasneem and Thai Ambassador to Dhaka Panpimon Suwannapongse were present.
