The European Commission yesterday said in a statement that it would provide humanitarian aid worth €1.5 million for the citizens of Bangladesh and Myanmar who were affected by tropical cyclone ‘Mora’ last May.
Myanmar, a neighbouring country of Bangladesh, also affected by the cyclone, will get half-a-million euro while Bangladesh will get the rest.
The total aid package will be allocated as emergency relief assistance to ‘the most vulnerable people in storm-struck localities’ in both the South Asian countries, the commission said.
“Cyclone Mora has left tens of thousands of people in Bangladesh and Myanmar in dire need of humanitarian assistance. These families have lost their homes, belongings and often their sources of income,” said Christos Stylianides, EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management.
With this new contribution from the EU, emergency support will be provided to ensure that the storm victims most in need get shelters to keep them safe and find ways to tackle this hard time, Stylianides added. According to data made available by the government of Bangladesh, some 52,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed in the cyclone, leaving over 2,00,000 people displaced.
The worst-hit area is Cox’s Bazar district, the release said. Cyclone Mora made landfall along the south-eastern coast of Bangladesh on May 30.
