PM for continuation of democratic trend for prosperity

Underscoring the need for the continuity of the healthy democratic trend, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the country will move towards further prosperity through such practice, reports UNB.

"We want a healthy democratic trend to continue in the country through which it'll move forward further," she said when leaders and workers of Jubo Mohila League met her at her official residence Ganobhaban in the afternoon marking the 15th founding anniversary of the ruling party's associate wing.

The Prime Minister said if there is no continuity of development and a long period in hand, it is not possible for a government to carry out development in its true sense.

She said it is now clear before people that there had been no development in the country when BNP was in power. "Rather, there was down-gradation everywhere and there was no basic rights of common people and peace."

With the continuity of power, she said, the country is moving towards prosperity as they work from the core of their hearts for people's welfare. "The goal of our politics is to change the fate of the oppressed, downtrodden and hard-working people."

The Awami League chief also asked the leaders and workers of Jubo Mohila League to further strengthen the organisation following the ideals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Mentioning that the Awami League government has worked a lot for ensuring the rights of women, she directed the Jubo Mohila League leaders and workers to massively project and publicise its steps taken for the welfare of the womenfolk and their empowerment. "The empowerment of women has been ensured in every tier of the state as the current Prime Minister and Leader of the House, Speaker, Deputy Leader of the House and Opposition Leader are women."

Recalling the contributions of the Jubo Mohila League to each movement since their inception in 2002, Hasina said after her arrest in 2007 during the Army-backed caretaker government, it collected some 25 lakh signatures in just 15 days demanding her release.

Mentioning that when BNP was in power, they had resorted to badmouthing in the House, he said, "But, the present Opposition in Parliament doesn't use such bad language and instead they make constructive criticism and take part in discussions on bills."

The Prime Minister also suggested that young female leaders and workers move forward with a certain ideology of politics which is to work for ensuring the development of the country and the welfare of its people.

Chaired by Jubo Mohila League president Nazma Akhter, the programme was also addressed by its general secretary Apu Ukil.

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader was present at the dais.

Earlier, the Jubo Mohila League leaders greeted the Prime Minister with bouquets.
