Gold smuggler jailed in Ctg
A Chittagong court on Wednesday sentenced a gold smuggler to six years imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling 45 gold bars through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CSAIA) in 2014.
The convicted is Md Badiul Alam, hailing from Paschim Gujrar union in Raojan upazila. The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default he has to suffer two months more jail.
According to prosecution, customs intelligence arrested Badiul along with 45 gold bars on December 28, 2014.
Later, a case was filed with Patenga Police Station.
After examining all the records and 10 witnesses, Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shah-e-Nur handed down the verdict in the afternoon.
Youth found dead in Sylhet
An unidentified young man was found dead along the bank of Surma River at Khalpar village in Dakkhin Surma upazila on Thursday.
Local people spotted the body, aged about 28, wearing pant and shirt, in the area around 8am and informed the police. On information, police sent the body to local hospital morgue for autopsy. The reasons behind the killing could not be known immediately.
Road accidents kill 4 in Sylhet
Four men were killed and four others injured in separate accidents in Osmani Nagar upazila and Joitapur upazila on Wednesday. In Osmani Nagar upazila, three men were killed in a head-on collision between a bus of ‘Shyamali Paribahan’ and a CNG- run auto-rickshaw at Goalabazar area Sylhet-Dhaka highway on Wednesday evening.
The deceased were identified as Mangal Mia, 19, son of late Jalal Mia, Askandar Ali, 55, son of late Soyab Ali, Saiful Amin, 30, all of them hailing from Osmani Nagar upazila. Following the incident, locals blocked the road for half an hour and later, police brought the situation under control. In Joitapur upazila, a businessman was killed in an accident at Damri area on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 45, son of former UP chairman late Nazrul Islam.
Book on Zia launched
A book on the life and works of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman was launched on Wednesday night by Zia Parishad.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir unveiled the cover of the book at a simple ceremony at BNP chairperson's Gulshan office.
The 184-page book was published by Zia Parishad to mark the slain ex-president's 36th death anniversary.
BNP standing committee members Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu and ex-VC of Dhaka University Prof. Emajuddin Ahmed spoke at the programme.
Man electrocuted
A salesman died from electrocution and two others sustained burn injuries at the entrance of Ayesha Mosharraf market at Kadamtali in the capital on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Md Liton, 30, son of Ismail Hawlader of South Dania in Jatrabari. He used to work in a clothing store of the market.
Liton accompanied by shop owner Md Yunus and the owner's nephew Saidul Islam was entering the market around 11:30am. As they unknowingly stepped in rainwater with a live electric wire in it they got electrocuted, said Sub Inspector of DMC Police camp Md Bacchu Mia.
FH Arif takes over as Rotary Governor
F H Arif has taken over as the Rotary Governor for Rotary International District 3281 Bangladesh from 1 July, says a press release.
In 2017-18 he will lead social welfare and community development activities of 204 Rotary Clubs along with 222 Rotaract Clubs, 79 Interact Clubs, 25 Earlyact Clubs, around 350 Rotary Community Corps and many Government-Nongovernment partners. He had served earlier in 1994-95 as the elected chief of the youth wing of Rotary of Bangladesh.
