The poet-activist Farhad Mazhar is still in a trauma. He is often shivering in his hospital bed, according to his attendant in the hospital.
Farhad has been undergoing treatment at cabin No. 1106 of the Birdem Hospital.
Dr AKM Musa, who was treating Farhad, told The Independent yesterday that his condition was stable. He, however, declined to elaborate on Farhad’s problems regarding blood sugar and hypertension.
On-duty nurse Jannatul Ferdous said some tests were being conducted to find out the writer’s physical condition. The doctor would give an update of his condition after the completion of the tests, she added.
“Farhad has blood sugar and hypertension. His condition is better than yesterday (Tuesday),” said Shima Das, director of Ubinig, a community-based research and advocacy organisation.
Shima has been taking care of Farhad, who was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday night after the court allowed him to return home.
The writer was rescued from Jessore 19 hours after he went missing from his Adabar home on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, the case filed over the ‘abduction’ of Farhad was shifted to the Detective Branch (DB) of police. The case was transferred to the DB from Adabar police station at the directive of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah.
Biplob Kumar Sarker, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon police, confirmed the news yesterday.
After Farhad was rescued, his family members had filed a general dairy with Adabar police station. The police accepted it as a regular complaint after recording Farhad’s statement under Section 164.
In the statement, the writer said soon after he had come out of his residence on Monday morning, some unidentified persons forcibly blindfolded him and put him on a microbus. He said did not know any of them and they did not demand any money from him.
In another development, speaking at a function at Tongi police station, home affiars minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday praised the police for rescuing the writer unhurt. He expressed hope that the mystery behind his ‘abduction’ would be unveiled very soon.
After Farhad went missing, his family members claimed that he was kidnapped.
After Farhad was picked up, his mobile phone was used to call his wife. At 5:29am, Farhad told his wife over mobile phone that “they were taking him away and that they would kill him”.
He also said that his abductors were demanding a ransom of Tk. 35 lakh.
Farhad was rescued at 11:30pm on Monday night from a Dhaka-bound Hanif Paribahan bus at Abhoynagar in Jessore. The bus was coming from Khulna, according to police sources.
The DB police interrogated the poet-activist for about two hours before producing him to the court for recording his statement. The Dhaka metropolitan magistrate’s court recorded his statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedures of Code (CrPC) yesterday and allowed him to return home after the writer submitted an application to the court.
