Mexican envoy calls on Speaker
Visiting Mexican envoy Melba Pria yesterday called on Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her office at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
During the meeting, they discussed about parliamentarian affairs, trading facilities, empowerment of women, safety of women as well as children of both countries, said a release in Dhaka yesterday.
Giving importance on exchanging mutual experience of parliament members, the Speaker, also Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association's Executive Committee said friendly relations of the two countries would be more helpful to exchange mutual experiences of parliamentarians. The Mexican Envoy also recalled the 136th Inter-Parliamentary Union assembly held in Dhaka between April 1 and April 5, this year.
Youth found dead in Keraniganj
The body of a youth was recovered from Abdullahpur in Keraniganj on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Meherazul Islam Shohag, 20, son of Mosharraf Hossain hailing from Chittagong. He used to live in Rajbari of Keraniganj with family. He is an honors 1st year student of Rajbari College.
Locals spotted his body in Abdullahpur area and informed police. Later police recovered the body and sent it to morgue for autopsy, said Officer-in-Charge of South Keraniganj Police Station Monir Hossain.
Family members claimed that Shohag was killed by criminals hired by his step-mother.
Five motorcycle thieves held
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), in a series of drives, arrested five members of an organised motorcycle thief’s gang during the last 24 hours ending at 10 am yesterday.
The arrested persons were Mohammad Yousuf, 34, Arif, 26, Shahed, 23, Ismail, 28, and Amanatullah Rubbi, 22.
Police also recovered eight stolen motorcycles and documents of 10 stolen motorbikes from their possessions, police said.
Police said their detective personnel arrested them with stolen motorbikes raiding in city’s different area from last night to this morning.
58 shop owners fined
The regional office of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) fined a total of 58 shop-owners of Rajshahi region Taka 6.90 lakh during the last month for selling and manufacturing adulterated food items.
BSTI in association with respective district administration conducted 38 mobile courts and found the shops guilty of manufacturing, possessing and selling of substandard and unhygienic food items violating BSTI rules and regulations.
The court also realised Taka 6.90 lakh from the shop owners in 11 districts during the month of June, a BSTI press release said yesterday. Director of BSTI, Altab Hossain said the regional office has expedited its drives against the manufacturer of substandard and adulterated foods.
The drives will continue for the greater interest of the people, he said.
