Unidentified assailants opened fire at a passenger bus at Fatullah area in Narayanganj district last night, leaving a businessman dead, District Superintendent of Police Khandaker Muhid Uddin told The Independent. The victim was identified as Nurul Islam, 42, of Railway Station Road of the town. He was the owner of Popular Electronics at Motaleb Plaza in the capital. According to the district police, a group of men halted a Narayanganj bound bus of Utshab Paribahan when it reached Mahmudnagar on the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link road around 9:30pm. They got onto the bus and beat up the trader. At one stage, they shot him from point blank range, leaving him critically injured.
Later, locals took him to Narayanganj General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead around 10pm, said Dr Mohammad Ali, on-duty physicians of the hospital’s emergency department. Quoting the victim’s wife, Sabina Yeasmin, Jakirul Alam, vice-president of Narayaganj District Juba league said Nurul was returning home with a large amount of money. They suspect that he was killed for the money. Eyewitness Sayed Hossain, a resident of Dapa Edrakpur area of Fatullah, said there were around sixty passengers on the bus, which left the capital around 8:30pm. Around 12 to 15 assailants beat and shot Nurul and left the spot hurriedly, hurling crude bombs.
