2 held with drugs in Magura
Magura: Detectives in a drive arrested two alleged drug peddlers along with hemp and phensidyl syrup from Batikadanga and Shibrampur areas in the district town on Saturday night, reports UNB.
Based on secrete information that Abul Kalam Azad, 50, hailing from Comilla district, has been selling hemp and other drug items illegally in the area, members of Detective Branch (DB) of police carried out a drive there in the night.
During the drive, the DB men arrested Azad along with five kilograms of hemp, said officer-in-charge of Magura Police Station Ilias Hossain.
Later, the DB team conducted another drive at the house of another suspected drug peddler Suman Sheikh in Shibrampur area and arrested his wife Shahina Begum, 26, along with six bottles of Indian phensidyl syrup.
Two separate cases were filed with Magura Police Station in connection with the incident.
15 shops gutted in Manikganj
Manikganj: A fire broke out early yesterday burning down at least 15 fruit shops in bus stand area of Sadar upazila, reports UNB.
Local people said they noticed the fire around 4:00 am and informed fire service and police. The fire fighters managed to control the blaze after one hour of frantic efforts, said Babul Hossain, a member of local fire service.
However, no casualty was reported over the fire, he said.
19 injured in Narail clash
Narail: At least 19 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Sarole village in Lohagara upazila on Saturday night, reports UNB
Police said two groups of villagers—one led by Alam and the other led by Khokan—had been at loggerheads over establishing dominance in the area.
As a sequel to the enmity, supporters of the two groups engaged in a clash in the night equipped with local weapons, leaving at least 19 people of both groups injured.
The injured were admitted to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, said sub-inspector Prabir Das of Lohagara Police Station, adding that additional policemen have been deployed in the area to ward off further trouble.
Man killed in road mishap

A motorcyclist was killed as a truck hit him at Chamagram on the Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway in Sadar upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Rasel Ahmed, 35, a resident of Chapainawabganj municipality. Police said the accident occurred in the morning as the truck hit Rasel while he was going to Shibganj, leaving him dead on the spot.
Police recovered the body and handed it over to his family members.
Youth commits suicide
PANCHAGARH: A youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree outside his house at Prodhanabad village under Boda upazila of the district on Saturday night, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Mizan 18, son of Yunus Ali. On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
Police said the cause of suicide could not be known immediately. An unnatural death (UD) case has been filed with Boda Police Station in this regard.
31 arrested in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: Police in special drives in last two days arrested 31 persons, including three activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, from eight upazilas of the district, reports BSS.
Police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
During the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested nine persons, Kalaroa police arrested three activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, Tala police six, Kaliganj police three, Shyamnagar police four, Assasuni police four, Patkelghata police arrested one accused and Debhata police arrested one accused.
Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.
