In addition to their regular duty, the Bangladesh Army has taken preparations to face any terror or militant attacks that may occur in next 10 years in Bangladesh.

“We have made a strategic assessment to prepare ourselves to combat incidents like the Café Holey Artisan at Gulshan or Atiya Mohal at Sylhet,” a senior military officer told The Independent.

During the conversation with The Independent, commanding officer (CO) of Commando battalion of Bangladesh Army Lieutenant Colonel Matbar Mohammad Imrul Hassan narrated how the commandos had successfully completed the operation during the Gulshan café attack.

The senior military officer informed that to face any ‘unconventional war’ a specialised commando brigade has already been formed and a Brigadier General was posted as commander of the brigade.

The Bangladesh Army formed a commando battalion in 1997 and it was provided required training at home and abroad.

He said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over a flag to brigade commander of the independent commando brigade through a flag-hoisting function to be held soon.

After forming the commando battalion, the commandos gave trainings to policemen of SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. They also trained naval personnel to form Navy SWAT Team, and helped to form a commando unit of police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
