RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a post-rally agitation meeting here yesterday called for protecting the Rajshahi's key establishments from erosion by the River Padma, reports BSS. They said erosion of the river Padma in different points of the district including Charghat and Bagha upazilas took a serious turn as many important establishments, including Rajshahi Cadet College and Sardah Police Academy were under threat to be devoured by the river. Due to incessant rainfall for the last several days and on rush of water from across the border, the water of the river Padma was in spate and many riverside establishments of the district were on the threat of erosion. Rajshahi Raksha Sangram Parishad (RRSP) organised the meeting at the office premises of Bangladesh Water Development Board in the city putting forward the demand.
With RRSP President Liakat Ali in the chair, Awami League Leader Asaduzzaman, RRSP General Secretary Jamat Khan, Language Veteran Mosharraf Hossain Akunji, Freedom Fighter Dr Abdul Matin, Journalist Mustafizur Rahman Khan, Advocate Entajul Haque Babu, Women Leader Kolpona Roy and Director of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sharif Uddin spoke on the occasion. The speakers said more than hundred- year-old Sardah Police Line, Rajshahi Cadet College in Charghat and age-old Sericulture Nursery in Bagha are threatened as river Padma was devouring the surrounding areas and also the establishments near-by are under threat of erosion.
The river has eroded many villages, fields and trees in the last couples of years. Already a three-kilometre long stretch from Bulanpur to Nabaganga has been devoured affecting more than 500 families. If no measure to check erosion of the River Padma is taken immediately, various important establishments of Charghat upazila and even of Rajshahi city and upazilas of Paba, Godagari and Bagha might be swallowed by the river. They demanded construction of a permanent river protection embankment along the River Padma. RRSP General Secretary Jamat Khan said: "We repeatedly appealed to the local MPs and officials of WDB but no one came forward to check erosion. Only during the monsoon when river is at spate with turbulent current, some sacks filled with sands are dropped in the water, just like throwing away money in water and nothing else." He also expressed his disappointment at non-allocation of fund to check erosion of the river Padma.
