79 BCL leaders quit in protest

A total of 79 leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), including 67 of its
central committee, have resigned from their posts protesting, what they said, the involvement of unit president Mursheduzzaman Khan Babu and general secretary Saiful Islam in extortion and anti-organisational activities.

The members announced their resignation at a press conference at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the BAU yesterday. They also urged the central BCL leaders to form a new committee after dissolving the present one.
Those, who resigned, include a vice-president, three joint-secretaries, three organising secretaries, 16 deputy secretaries, 4 assistant secretaries, 19 secretaries of different sectors and 21 executive members, confirmed Atiq Shahriar, office secretary of the BAU unit BCL.
Apart from these resignations, 12 other BCL leaders, including the presidents and general secretaries of different hall units, also resigned from their posts.
A large section of the committee has been agitating on the campus over the last few days protesting corruption, tender manipulation, drug addiction, anarchy on the campus, assault on teachers and staff, torture and killings of students, and involvement of anti-organisational activities of the two top leaders and their close associates.
The BCL committee of the BAU, having 119 members, was formed on November 3, last year.
Police arrested seven senior BCL leaders in Mymensingh, including Saiful Islam, for their involvement in several cases, on July 7 and 29.
