Central leaders of Bangladesh Deed Writers Association yesterday threatened to call a countrywide strike if the deed writers of Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur, evicted
on March 27 this year, are not rehabilitated at the same place.
Md Mostafizur Rahman Mallik, joint general secretary of Bangladesh Deed Writers Association, declared the programme at a rally at Nawabganj upazila UNO office complex, yesterday.
“There are 5,000 deed writers in 485 upazilas, but the incident in Nawabganj upazila is unique,” he said.
Deed writers from 23 upazila of Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh gathered at the rally. The Nawabganj upazila administration evicted the deed writers vandalizing their sheds, located inside the UNO office complex, on March 27 this year.
The eviction without prior notice has disrupted much the deed writing in the upazila, causing sufferings to those willing to sell lands.
Many people were seen waiting and returning home without writing deeds. Besides, the government is also losing revenue earning, said Ansar Ali, president of Nawabganj upazila Deed Writers Samity.
“In Nawabganj upazila, there are 85 deed writers, who have been passing bad days due to the eviction. We are now floating,” said Mizanur Rahman, general secretary of the Samity. He alleged that Nawabganj upazila UNO Israil Hossain demanded Tk 500 monthly from each deed writers for using the premises, but they denied to pay the money.
“He has intentionally evicted us from there as he has failed to realise the money,” alleged the general secretary.
Mizanur Rahman, secretary of the association, filed a writ petition to the High Court on May 4 this year.  The court in an order on July 15 ordered the law ministry to form a probe team and submit the report as early as possible. Foysal Atique Bin Kader, senior assistant secretary of law ministry, visited  Nawabganj upazila yesterday, but he declined to make any comment. Sankar Chandra Barman, Nawabganj upazila sub registrar, also refused to  make any comment regarding the incident.
UNO Israil Hossain said the eviction has been lawful. Deed writer Anisur Rahman said he has been writing deed since 1977 there. But he did not face such problem before.
