That more doses than the permitted level of three ingredients are being used in producing energy drinks and the same are being freely marketed is a worrying piece of information. A report on this appeared in a reputed daily newspaper on July 27. According to the report, the energy drinks named ‘Power’ or ‘Feelings’ contain excessive level of sodium benzoate, caffeine and saccharin. After examination the Institute of Public Health (IPH) has got evidence of the same. Some sub-standard companies are producing these drinks and the same are being sold in different places in the country, including the rural areas. Being lured by attractive advertisements the unconscious and gullible parents and guardians are buying these drinks for even their toddlers and adolescent children and thus exposing them to health hazards.
Businessmen of the country have the right to produce commodities and make profits by selling the same. But they cannot and must not be allowed to make profits at the cost of human health. Thus, government’s regulatory role is extremely important in this regard. Many such companies have sprung up in different places of the country in recent times. These drinks do not have nutritional values and the youngsters in droves get accustomed to these. Intake of these drinks on a regular basis create in them some kind of addiction which is difficult to get rid of. In many cases, they lose appetite for taking nutritious food items, fruits and vegetables and become vulnerable to various diseases.
Smoking cigarettes and consumption of raw tobacco are exposing millions of people to various health hazards. Due to the outcry of health conscious citizens the government took steps and tobacco companies were obliged to declare in cigarette packets that the contents posed great dangers to the health of their users. The government can enforce a similar policy of warning in relation to so called energy drinks.
