According to the Bangladesh Astronomical Society (BAS), Eid-ul-Fitr is most likely to be held on Monday with the moon being sighted on Sunday. The National Moon Sighting Committee will sit on Sunday to announce the sighting of the Eid moon.
The date for Eid-ul-Fitr will be announced based on astronomical and meteorological reports after the official sighting of the Eid moon.
Munir Hasan, vice-president of the BAS, told the BBC Bangla service yesterday that their calculations went back a long time. They had been prepared by the society's founder-president Prof. Anwarur Rahman Khan, the late teacher of astrophysics at Dhaka University, for Eid days till 2025.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh meteorological department (BMD) has predicted paltry showers at one or two places in northern Rangpur, Rajshahi division, and the southwest of Khulna division, along with Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barisal and Chittagong divisions.
There could be heavy to moderate rains with thunder at a few places on Monday.
The forecast for the day will be announced formally by the BMD’s director on Sunday, Met office sources said yesterday.
Meanwhile, the rain has abated since Thursday.
